Gordon Pelton Biography

GORDON PELTON – Artist
Gordon was born colorblind. So, most of his life he avoided everything that required an understanding of color, everything including art. Though he was always fascinated by works of fine art, his artist friends, knowing he was colorblind, consistently discouraged him from taking up painting himself. Finally, in 2008 Gordon met an artist who encouraged him to explore monochromatic art. So Gordon bought a book on drawing and practiced pencil portraits by copying photographs and greeting cards.
In 2009 Gordon began experimenting with the techniques of charcoal, pastel and acrylic portraiture. Unable to discriminate among real-world colors, Gordon created portraiture either in black and white or in vivid colors that reached beyond real life. Avoiding colors from nature, he began painting faces in different and interesting ways, in a style of his own, a style that did not require normal color vision.
In 2012, Gordon discovered he could achieve a physical third dimension in his portraits by inserting common screws into a panel of plywood, adjusting the depth of each screw, then painting the heads of the screws. Gordon’s typical 3-D portraits are about 20X24 inches and each requires more than two thousand screws.
In just the past few years, in art exhibits and contests in the Grass Valley area of California, Gordon has won two second place and ten first place awards for his pastel, acrylic and three dimensional art. His black and white pastel portrait of Teddy Roosevelt earned three blue ribbons at the Nevada County Fair in 2011 — including Best in Show.
